You see this phrase thrown around a lot, especially in the abortion debate, but I think a lot of people don’t really understand what it means.
Bodily Autonomy, sometimes called Bodily Integrity, is the idea that a person has an inviolable right to determine what happens to their physical body, and that a violation of a person’s consent in matters concerning their own body is unethical, immoral, and possibly criminal.
This does not mean “you are allowed to do whatever you want.” It isn’t comparable to property rights or taxation or laws regarding public health that impact whole communities.
What it does mean is that your body should always be under your control. You can chose or deny what things involving your physical body are at stake. Some examples:
You can choose to donate your organs but, No one can steal your organs
You can choose to get a haircut, but no one should chop off your hair without permission.
You can choose to get a tattoo, but no one should hold you down and forcibly tattoo anything onto you.
You can choose to have sex with another consenting person, but no one should sexually violate you.
Doctors should ask permission from you (or someone you have given permission to speak on your behalf) before administering drugs or treatments
This previous point is important in many capacities, but one very relevant on to reproductive rights is that doctors should ask and respect choice made regarding birth- whether to have a c-section, whether to have an epidural, etc.
Infants should not undergo circumcision, as they are unable to consent. (If adults want to undergo circumcision for whatever reason, they can do so.)
You should not be forced to give blood for any reason (including donation to save another person, OR for drug testing. These actions may be volunteered, but should not be mandatory)
Intersex infants should not be subjected to genital surgery unless there is a pressing health need (such as a blocked urinary tract or exposed internal organs) at which point, the parents need to be consulted.
And YES, a person should not be forced to carry a pregnancy to term if they do not want to, no matter how they became pregnant in the first place.
And the list goes on. We have to start with the understanding that in matters concerning the physical body, you should be the final authority, and you should always be given the information, resources, and opportunity to make the best possible choice for yourself.
About the drug testing point, how would you rather it be done if the person did not want a blood test

I’m posting this primarily for sex workers who are going to be majorly at risk because of this bullshit, but honestly, I would suggest everyone turn on ghost mode or just delete the app.
I feel like I should make a post about this because it’s not something that’s very well-known, and that Americans in particular may need to know about given the uncertain state of our healthcare system at the moment. I’ve wanted to write this out for a while, It’s kind of a long post, so sorry about that!
If you have an emergency and have to go to the hospital, you’ll owe the hospital a lot of money. (I got into a car wreck and broke my ankle and my arm. My hospital bill was around $20,000)
You’ll also owe the ambulance provider, if you need one. (My ambulance bill was about $800)
You may get separate bills from the anesthesiologist or surgeon. (My anesthesiologist bill was $1,700)
You may need follow-up appointments. (My orthopedic surgeon billed me for the appointments and his surgery together and it was about $1,000)
You’ve also got to pay for medical equipment you need afterward, like crutches or a walking boot. (Mine cost about $75)
Altogether, I ended up with almost $24,000 in medical debt from one car accident. That’s a really scary number for someone like me who makes $10/hr at a 12 hour a week job.
I got my debt down to $1075 by making some phone calls and submitting some paperwork.
The first thing I did was contact the hospital. They don’t make it easy to find, but many hospitals (perhaps most hospitals?) have financial assistance programs for people who can’t afford medical bills. I don’t make a lot of money, and I have bills to pay, so they were able to help me. I called the billing department and asked if they had any assistance programs for low income people who can’t pay their bills. I had to call multiple times, and I got transferred in circles by people who didn’t know what I was talking about. Finally, I got an appointment with someone in “Eligibility Services” (I don’t know what other hospitals call it, if it’s something different). I had to bring my pay stubs and copies of all of my bills. When I got to the hospital for the appointment, nobody knew what I was talking about so I had to wander a little to find where I needed to go. I spoke with the guy in Eligibility Services, and I waited for a decision on how much of the bill they would forgive. A month later, I got a call telling me it was totally forgiven.
I did the same thing for my ambulance bill and my anesthesiologist, but the process was a LOT easier. I just had to mail some paperwork and it was totally forgiven.
I didn’t bother with the medical equipment suppliers, since the bills came from separate companies and I didn’t feel like going through the process twice for $75. I was assured at the hospital that they had similar programs for debt forgiveness, so I could have probably avoided paying that too.
The only thing I couldn’t get taken care of was the surgeon/follow-up appointment cost, but they were able to put me on a no-interest payment plan.
Medical debt is scary because it’s something that can come from stuff that’s already really scary. I didn’t need the burden of $24,000 in debt on top of trying to get around on a crutch with a broken arm (it’s not easy, believe me!).. but I can’t imagine what it would be like with a bigger debt or a more severe medical emergency. I see lots of people in even worse trouble than I was in, both financially and medically. Please know that there are options for you when that GoFundMe doesn’t do enough. Even if your income is higher than mine, it’s worth a shot even for partial debt forgiveness.
I am about 900% sure there are people who don`the know this.

Actually I have seen zero posts on tumblr about the crisis in Illinois. Illinois has not had a state budget in over two years. You read that correctly. Our governor, Bruce Rauner, is doing fuckall for this state. He won’t approve a budget, and the ones he comes up with suck so the state senate won’t approve them. The GOP and Democrats are locked in a battle over this. Schools are closing. A lot of schools won’t open this fall. The second largest school district in the state won’t open. This is a good example of why study after study after studyhas shown that discrimination against racialized people looking for work is very real. Oh, and don’t get too smug if you’re not in the USA - similar studies have shown that the same shit happens in Canada, Germany, the UK, Sweden - basically in every country you can think of.

When I was a student at Cambridge I remember an anthropology professor holding up a picture of a bone with 28 incisions carved in it. ‘This is often considered to be man’s first attempt at a calendar,’ she explained. In that second I stopped to question almost everything I had been taught about the past. How often had I overlooked women’s contributions? How often had I sped past them as I learned of male achievement and men’s place in the history books? Then I read Rosalind Miles’s book ‘The Women’s History of the World’ (recently republished as ‘Who Cooked the Last Supper?’) and I knew I needed to look again. History is full of fabulous females who have been systematically ignored, forgotten or simply written out of the records. They’re not all saints, they’re not all geniuses, but they do deserve remembering.
My boyfriend talks in his sleep and because he’s bilingual, he says some hilarious/weird/sometimes creepy shit. I ask him every morning if he remembers saying this stuff and he has no idea about any of it.

This sadly isn’t at all Holocaust-specific, stealing Jewish children to
baptise them was really common throughout European history, so much so you had really detailed laws on when it was acceptable since at least the 1200s.
I don’t know
about France, but in the Habsburg Empire, for example, the practice of clandestinely
baptising Jewish children was so widespread that I recall a specific
clause banning it in at least one Penal Code after the 1790s (i.e. after the
Toleration Edict). Normally is was nominally forbidden and not really practiced by the clergy itself, but since Catholicism allows emergency baptisms to be performed by laypeople, you had lots of landowning nobility or just, like, regular Catholics baptising Jewish children to make them into “good Christians”. The most famous case is probably Pio Edgardo Mortara, who was taken from his Jewish parents in the 1850s when he was six and raised by the Pope himself after a Catholic maid baptised him in secret (it became a huge international scandal that played a pretty significant role in the demise of the Papal States and the reunification of Italy).
